Sean R. Clark

The $1,000 winner of the Meyer & Bowden Scholarship is law student Sean Clark. Mr. Clark is studying at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law. Circa 2003 I was graduating middle school. To round out the year, a teacher rolled in the television and VCR to dazzle my history class with the VHS rendition of the musical 1776. Up until that moment, I was laissez-faire about my education. However, that showtune resonated with me over the years. I became very fond of the Founding Fathers. My reverence for the founding principles has inspired my lifelong voyage of protecting our unalienable rights. I was resolute in my decision to become a lawyer.

Fast forward 13 years to 2016. I was sworn in as a Springfield Police Officer. I was jovial with the responsibility to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, respectively. As I swore my oath I felt my duty harken back to the founders. Eight years of public service later, I was sworn in as a Massachusetts State Trooper. As I was upholding the law of the Commonwealth, Murphy's law stepped in to rear its disastrous head. In June 2025 while standing outside my cruiser, I was hit by a vehicle while on a traffic stop on the Mass Pike. Healing my dozen broken bones and other unplumbed injuries has been the main staple of my time since. However, that time has prompted me to reflect on my life. After 23 years of relegating my dream on the back burner, I have applied and will be attending law school this Fall.

The most superficial goal with this degree will be to provide for my wife and four children: Quinn Anthony, Caleigh Marie, Finley Adams, and Harper Jean. Finley Adams namesake is in honor of the founding father. On a more profound level, my goal is simply to help people. Years in public service have revealed to me that there are a lot of people who need assistance. A a police officer for 10 years I have helped people in their most devastating moments. But as a lawyer, I can have a more meaningful and longitudinal impact on my fellow citizens. With brevity in mind, as long as I help, someone I can reflect on my life with fulfilment.
